Management Accountant

Working within the framework defined by the AFE Group and UK accounting practices, the Management Accountant will support the Financial Controller in delivering accurate and timely financial reporting and maintaining strong financial controls.

The role will take primary responsibility for manufacturing finance, variance analysis, and inventory integrity, ensuring a clear understanding of business performance and providing meaningful insight behind the numbers.

A key focus of the role is to translate financial data into clear, commercially relevant insight, supporting operational and commercial stakeholders in understanding cost drivers, risks, and opportunities.

Job Accountabilities:

Financial Reporting & Month-End

  • Support the Financial Controller in the preparation and delivery of monthly management accounts in line with reporting deadlines
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of:
    • Journals (accruals, prepayments, adjustments)
    • Balance sheet reconciliations
  • Maintain integrity of financial data to support reliable reporting
  • Prepare supporting analysis and commentary to enable the Financial Controller to review and finalise financial results

Manufacturing Finance & Variance Analysis

  • Ownership of detailed manufacturing variance analysis, including:
    • Production / works variances
    • Material price variance (PPV)
    • Labour efficiency and recovery
    • Overhead absorption and recovery
  • Monthly reconciliation of production costs to cost of sales, including:
    • Inventory movements (WIP, Finished Goods, Raw Materials)
    • Absorption versus actual cost differences
    • Identification and explanation of variances
  • Maintain and support the standard costing system within the ERP environment
  • Ensure accuracy of Labour rates & Overhead Allocations

Inventory, Stock & Provisions

  • Ownership of detailed inventory accounting and reconciliation across:
    • Finished Goods
    • Work in Progress
    • Raw Materials
  • Monthly inventory reconciliation and valuation, ensuring alignment between operational and financial records
  • Preparation and reporting of:
    • Aged inventory analysis
    • Inventory provisions (slow-moving and obsolete stock)
  • Provide analysis and insight to support the Financial Controller in ensuring overall stock integrity

Fixed Assets & Capitalisation

  • Maintain the fixed asset register on a monthly basis
  • Ensure capitalisation of expenditure is in line with AFE Group policies
  • Monitor depreciation and asset movements
  • Support the Financial Controller in ensuring compliance with group capitalisation policies

Controls, Compliance & Support

  • Support the Financial Controller in maintaining financial controls and compliance
  • Assist and provide support for External Audit
  • Provide support to the transactional finance team (AP/AR) where required during peak periods or cover situations

Business Partnering & Communication

  • Work closely with stakeholders across Operations, Sales, and Commercial teams
  • Provide clear, structured financial insight, particularly in relation to:
    • Inventory and provisions
    • Manufacturing and production variances
    • Material price movements (PPV)
    • Overhead absorption and cost recovery
  • Translate financial data into meaningful, commercially relevant information
  • Support budget holders with:
    • Expense reporting
    • Cost control
    • Understanding of financial performance
  • Support the Financial Controller in communicating financial performance to senior management
  • Challenge assumptions constructively and contribute to improved decision-making

Experience and skills

  • Part-qualified or fully qualified accountant (CIMA / ACCA preferred) – QBE may be considered
  • Experience within a manufacturing environment (ideal but not essential)
  • Experience in:
    • Standard costing
    • Variance analysis
    • Inventory and WIP accounting
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience with ERP systems (SYSPRO very desirable)
  • Strong analytical and communication skills
